“All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’” – 1 Peter 5:5

The jersey of a Christian athlete is stitched with humility. While the lie of the Enemy is for you to put on the jersey of pride and beat your chest to victory, the Word teaches us that it is only in humility that we can glorify God. Furthermore, those with pride in their hearts, place themselves against God and those He has called us to love and serve.

The reality of our pride is that it inhibits us from receiving and giving the love of Jesus and glorifying God because we have decided we’re good on our own. And while you may be talented enough to win the game with pride and selfishness, is winning in that manner worth positioning yourself against God? Whether you put on a jersey of pride or humility doesn’t guarantee either winning or losing, but whatever one you decide to wear will effect your ability to glorify God and love others. The truth is, as C.S. Lewis once wrote, “A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.”

We clothe ourselves in humility similar to suiting up for our game. We must “take off” our pride and selfish motives and “put on” humility. You can demonstrate humility in many ways, but its begins by going before your Father and thanking Him for who He is and for what He has done for you. When we recognize how great and good our God is there is no other way to respond except with humility.

  • Spend some time in the presence of God. Confess and repent of your pride.
  • Thank God for who He is and what He has done in your life.
  • Ask God to clothe you in humility so that you may glorify Him and love others.
