19 This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: 20 If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. – 1 John 3:19-20

We talked about this before, but our real enemy is not the other team, but the whispered lies, false accusations, and self-doubt that you battle in your head before, during, and after your games. I truly believe that you can play in greater freedom, confidence, and with the most fun when you believe the truth of God’s Word overagainst the lies of the enemy. One of the truths that can combat the real opponent is found here in 1 John: Our God is greater than our heart.

In Scripture, anytime the word “heart” is used it can usually be translated to mean your soul. Simply put, your soul is represented by your thoughts, feelings, and decisions. Now let’s think about what this passage is saying. When your thoughts lie to you, or your feelings are overwhelming you, and even when you make a bad decision – GOD IS GREATER. The truth of His love for you is stronger than anything you think, feel or do. Nothing can separate you from His love (Romans 8:38).

I find this truth personally freeing because I battled self-doubt a lot when I played. I tended to listen to the thoughts of not being good enough as an athlete and certainly as a Christian. As a result, this would lead to feeling discouraged and it wasn’t long before my play was negatively affected by the lies I was believing. I have a feeling some of you know what I am talking about. The challenge for you today is to believe that God is greater than those lies. Allow this truth to speak louder than those whispers and claim victory in the name of Jesus.

  • Reflect on what lies you are hearing.
  • Pray “God is greater” over the lies.
  • Ask God to fill and strengthen you with His love.
